Mary Boleyn (c. 1499–1543) was an English courtier and the sister of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII. She is best known for her association with Henry VIII, her two marriages, and her later withdrawal from court after a secret marriage.

Early life and family

Mary Boleyn was born around 1499 into the influential Boleyn family, the daughter of Thomas Boleyn and Elizabeth Howard. She was the elder sister of Anne Boleyn and George Boleyn, placing her at the centre of Tudor court politics.

At the Tudor court

Mary served at the English court and spent time in France. She later became associated with Henry VIII, though the exact length and nature of their relationship is not fully documented. She was one of Henry’s mistresses for an unknown period.

Marriages and later life

Mary married William Carey in 1520 and later secretly married William Stafford in 1534. Her secret marriage angered Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, leading to her removal from court. She spent her final years away from public life and died in 1543.
