Break with Rome and the Church of England

Henry's desire to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon led to a break with the papacy. In 1534, Parliament declared him supreme head of the Church of England, beginning the English Reformation. This move allowed him to remarry and solidified royal control over religious matters.

Six marriages and succession

Henry married six times: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. His quest for a male heir drove many of his decisions. Three of his children later became monarchs: Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I.
