Who he was

Vlad III Dracula, also called Vlad Țepeș, was born in 1431 in Sighișoara, Transylvania. He was a member of the ruling family of Wallachia and served as voivode, or prince, three times: in 1448, from 1456 to 1462, and again in 1476.

What he did

His reigns were marked by efforts to centralize authority, suppress rival boyars, and defend Wallachia from Ottoman expansion. He became notorious for using impalement as a punishment. A key military event was the Night Attack at Târgoviște in 1462 against Sultan Mehmed II.

Why he matters

Vlad was killed in battle in 1476. His reputation for cruelty later shaped the Dracula tradition in popular culture, notably Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. While he has no direct Canadian connection, he appears in global medieval history and heritage studies relevant to Canadian readers.
