Sasaki Kojirō, also known as Ganryū Kojirō, was a swordsman active around the turn of the 17th century. His birth year is commonly given as c. 1585, though historical records are uncertain. He is remembered primarily for his role in one of Japan's most famous sword fights.
The duel with Miyamoto Musashi
On 13 April 1612, Kojirō faced Miyamoto Musashi in a duel on Ganryū-jima. In the most widely repeated account, Kojirō was defeated and killed. The encounter has become a cornerstone of Japanese martial lore.
Legacy and historical uncertainty
Much of Kojirō's life blends history with legend, making his biography partly unverifiable. Despite this, he remains a prominent figure in Japanese swordsmanship narratives and popular culture, often depicted as the master swordsman defeated by Musashi.
