Born Franz August Karl Albert Emanuel on 26 August 1819 at Schloss Rosenau near Coburg, he was the younger son of Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. He married Queen Victoria in 1840, and the couple had nine children, including the future King Edward VII.
