Neil Peart was a Canadian drummer and lyricist best known for his work with the progressive rock band Rush. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, he became one of rock's most influential drummers.

Early life

Neil Peart was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on September 12, 1952, and spent part of his childhood on his family’s dairy farm near Hagersville.

Rush and beyond

Peart joined Rush in 1974 as drummer and primary lyricist, shaping much of the band’s sound and lyrical identity. He also wrote nonfiction books drawn from travel and personal experiences, and was known for his interest in motorcycling.

Death and legacy

Peart died in Santa Monica on January 7, 2020, after a private struggle with glioblastoma. He is widely regarded as one of rock’s most influential drummers.
