Early life and NHL career

Lemieux was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1965 and was selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1984 NHL Draft. He spent his entire NHL career with Pittsburgh, winning two Stanley Cups (1991 and 1992) and multiple individual awards.

Health challenges and retirement

Lemieux's career was interrupted by serious health issues, including Hodgkin's lymphoma (diagnosed in 1993), chronic back and hip problems, and atrial fibrillation. These conditions led to his final retirement in 2006 after parts of 17 NHL seasons.

Ownership and legacy

In 1999, Lemieux bought the Penguins out of bankruptcy, becoming the first former player to own the team he starred for. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 and remains a major figure in Canadian and NHL hockey history.
