Maharaja Ranjit Singh
Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780–1839) was the founder and first maharaja of the Sikh Empire, which he ruled from 1801 until his death.

Early life
Ranjit Singh was born on 13 November 1780 in Gujranwala, now in Pakistan. He became chief of the Sukerchakia Misl in 1792 after his father's death.
Rise to power
He captured Lahore in 1799 and proclaimed himself maharaja in 1801. By 1820, he had consolidated rule over much of Punjab between the Sutlej and Indus rivers.
Legacy
Ranjit Singh is known as Sher-e-Punjab (Lion of Punjab) and remembered for including Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus in his administration. After his death in 1839, the empire weakened and collapsed.
