Louis Riel was a Métis political leader who founded Manitoba and led two major resistance movements. He was executed for high treason in 1885, becoming a lasting symbol in Canadian history.

Red River Resistance and the founding of Manitoba

In 1869–70, Riel led the Red River Resistance against Canadian expansion into the Red River Settlement. He formed a provisional government and negotiated with Ottawa, resulting in the Manitoba Act, 1870, which created Manitoba as a province and secured Métis land and language rights.

The North-West Rebellion and trial

After years in exile, Riel returned in 1884 to lead the North-West Rebellion, an armed uprising by Métis and Indigenous allies. Canadian forces defeated the rebellion at Batoche. Riel was captured, tried for high treason, and hanged in Regina on 16 November 1885.

Legacy and controversy
