Early life and education

Jack Layton was born in Montreal and grew up in Hudson, Quebec. He studied at McGill University and York University, later earning graduate credentials in political science.

Municipal and federal career

Layton entered elected politics through Toronto City Council in 1982, occasionally serving as acting mayor or deputy mayor. He became leader of the federal NDP in 2003 and won a House of Commons seat in Toronto—Danforth in 2004, steadily growing the party's federal support.

2011 election and legacy

In the 2011 federal election, the NDP won 103 seats under Layton, becoming the Official Opposition for the first time. He was named Leader of the Official Opposition but died of cancer in August 2011 at age 61, remembered as one of the most prominent leaders in NDP history.
