Historical background

Guan Yu lived around 160–220 CE and served under the warlord Liu Bei during the collapse of the Eastern Han. He became one of the most famous figures of the Three Kingdoms period, known for his loyalty and martial skill.

Death and legacy

Guan Yu was captured and executed in 220 CE by forces of Eastern Wu. His reputation for loyalty and righteousness grew after his death, leading to his eventual deification in Chinese religion.
