Empress Elisabeth of Austria (1837–1898), known as Sisi or Sissi, was the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I and empress consort of Austria from 1854 until her death.

Early life
Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie was born in Munich in 1837 into the House of Wittelsbach. She grew up in Bavaria before entering the Austrian imperial family through marriage.
Marriage and imperial role
She married Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1854 and became Empress of Austria. In 1867, she also became Queen of Hungary, where she had a significant ceremonial and political presence.
Death and assassination
In 1898, while travelling in Geneva, she was attacked by Luigi Lucheni, an Italian anarchist, and died from the stab wound shortly afterwards. The killing was widely reported as a political assassination.
