What happened

In August 1955, Till was visiting relatives in Mississippi. He was accused of offending a white woman at a store, then abducted, beaten, shot, and thrown into the Tallahatchie River. The two men charged, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, were acquitted by an all-white jury.

Why it matters

Till’s mother, Mamie, insisted on an open-casket funeral so the world could see the brutality of the attack. Photographs of his body appeared in Black newspapers and magazines, drawing national outrage and energizing the civil rights movement.
