Brendan Frederick Shanahan is a Canadian ice hockey executive and former professional left winger. He played 21 NHL seasons, won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings, and later served as president and alternate governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Early life and junior career

Brendan Shanahan was born in Toronto, Ontario, and developed as a hockey player in Ontario. He was drafted second overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.

Shanahan played 21 NHL seasons across five teams. He combined scoring ability with a physical style, finishing with 656 goals, 698 assists, and 2,489 penalty minutes in 1,524 regular-season games. He won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings in 1997, 1998, and 2002.

Executive career

After retiring in 2009, Shanahan moved into hockey administration. He later served as president and alternate governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs and also worked in NHL player safety.
