Sigmund von Birken (1626–1681) was a German Baroque poet, hymn writer, and literary figure. He was born into a Protestant pastor's family in Wildstein, Bohemia, and later studied law and philosophy at the University of Jena without completing his degree. He spent much of his career in Nuremberg, where he was appointed imperial record keeper in 1655.

Key details

Birken helped revive the Pegnesischen Blumenorden, a Nuremberg literary society that promoted the German language. He wrote hymns and poetry in the Baroque style. He died in Nuremberg on 12 June 1681 after suffering a stroke.
