The Antonov An-225 Mriya was a Soviet-designed, Ukrainian-built strategic cargo aircraft and the world’s largest fixed-wing aircraft. It was developed to transport the Buran space shuttle and destroyed in 2022.

What it is

The An-225 was developed by Antonov in the 1980s as an enlargement of the An-124 Ruslan, designed to carry the Soviet Buran space shuttle and related components. Its name Mriya means “Dream” in Ukrainian.

Why it mattered

With six turbofan engines and a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes, the An-225 held records as the heaviest aircraft ever built and the largest operational aircraft by wingspan. It could carry oversized cargo like generators, wind turbine blades, and locomotives.

What happened

The only completed An-225 was destroyed during fighting at Hostomel Airport near Kyiv in 2022. It remains a symbol of Ukrainian aerospace engineering and heavy-lift aviation.
