Warhol was born Andrew Warhola Jr. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1928 to Carpatho-Rusyn immigrant parents. He studied pictorial design at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, earning a BFA in 1949, then moved to New York City to work as a commercial illustrator.

By the early 1960s, Warhol became a leading Pop art figure, using screen printing and mass-media imagery. His work transformed advertising, consumer products, and celebrity photos—like Campbell’s Soup Cans and Marilyn Monroe portraits—into fine art.
